Eight Injured After a Driver Rams into a New York City Sidewalk

On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, a car accident occurred when a vehicle sped down an avenue in Manhattan’s East Village. The vehicle swerved out of control and literally drove into a sidewalk and smashed anything that got into its way including a flower stand and several people.

The crash occurred around 6:30 AM and left eight people injured including a 60 year-old grocery store worker. The vehicle left half a city block nearly ruined. According to police officials, the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs while he was driving. While they are still trying to figure out how fast his vehicle was moving, one witness believes that the accident occurred when two vehicles were racing down Second Avenue at very high speeds.

It was when the vehicles were swerving around cars that the driver lost control and rammed into the sidewalk. The vehicle was a white Nissan Altima that was rented. It rammed through a telephone booth, bicycles, a parking kiosk, a street sign, and even a large tree.

As a result, several people were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for their injuries. Three workers at the grocery store had to be hospitalized. According to police, a cyclist was even struck by a flying fire hydrant due to the accident. The 32 year-old driver faces multiple charges for driving while under the influence. This is not the driver’s first DUI charge either.

Driving While Impaired by Alcohol or Drugs

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a highly illegal crime and can lead to numerous accidents and injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, on average, about 1 in 3 people will be involved in a drunk driving accident sometime in their life. The statistics are frightening and illustrate that every year thousands of people are killed. To prevent drunk driving accidents, refrain from drinking and driving and call a cab instead.
