Two women were awarded $4.2 million dollars for their wounds
caused by the Los Angeles Police. The women were shot at by police during the
manhunt for Christopher Dorner, the ex-officer who went on a killing spree in
February of 2013.
Unfortunately, the two women were shot at while sitting in
their pickup truck as officers believed the pickup truck to be Christopher
Dorner’s. The settlement is $4.2 million, but the amount will be split between
the 71 year-old mother and the 47 year-old daughter for $2.1 million each. Police shot the mother twice in the back while
the daughter suffered injuries from resulting broken glass.
Personal Injury
Claims
All around the nation, individuals are filing personal
injury claims for their injuries. You may have heard the term “personal injury,”
but what exactly does it entail? Personal injury is defined as any injury to
the body, mind, or emotions. Thus, personal injury does not apply to property.
Common accidents that lead to personal injury claims include:
- Car accidents
- Slip and fall accidents
- Bicycle accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
- Dog bite attacks
- Medical malpractice incidents
- Defective products
- Workplace accidents
Often times, these accidents are caused by the negligence of
another. When a person acts irresponsibly he or she may cause an accident that
injures those nearby. For instance, if a person is texting while driving, the
driver may hit another car and cause the victim to suffer from traumatic brain
injury.
In the story told above, the police officers acted
negligently and shot the two women instead of checking to see firsthand if
Christopher Dorner was in their truck. These types of accidents are easily
preventable; thus, victims may be rewarded monetary compensation for their
injuries as a result.
